"Through its NDT and inspection department and Materials engineering (METALogic), TÜV Austria is able to assemble a team of subject matter experts of the respective fields through guide its customers through the complete Fitness for Service process."

Fitness for Service (FFS)  is defined as a ‘quantitative engineering evaluation to demonstrate the structural integrity of an in-service component that may contain a flaw or damage, or that may be operating under a specific condition that might cause a failure’ by API 579. Figure 2.1 in the API 579-1/ASME FFS-1 outlines the assessment procedures for various damage classes, providing a structured approach to evaluate different types of flaws or damages.

Based on a Fitness for Service (FFS) assessment, it can be decided whether a component can continue to operate safely in case a defect is found or when this component operates in a regime where there is a risk for the occurrence of a specific damage mechanism such as e.g. brittle fracture. FFS are typically performed on equipment, such as pressure vessels, piping or storage tanks.

Why Fitness For Service with TÜV AUSTRIA?

A Fitness for Service assessment requires a multi-disciplinary team. A FFS assessment can start from an irregularity found during inspection. Use of optimal inspection is required to fully characterize the flaw size. Additionally, Fitness for Service is not possible without knowledge and understanding of the active degradation mechanisms and the potential influence of the operation condition on material properties (embrittlement, softening, hardening, …).

Through its NDT and inspection department and Materials engineering (METALogic), TÜV Austria is able to assemble a team of subject matter experts of the respective fields through guide its customers through the complete Fitness for Service process. The in-house department as well as metallurgical lab allow flexible additional investigations in case required for the process.

This multi-disciplinary approach allows TÜV AUSTRIA to provide rapid assessments whenever irregularities are detected during inspections. Specifically, a dedicated Fitness for Service team can be assembled and foreseen during turnarounds to provide quick response.

Fitness for Service levels

Level 1: Basic Assessment

This level provides a quick and conservative evaluation using readily available data and simple calculations. It’s essential for initial screenings and less critical components, allowing for rapid decision-making on whether further analysis is needed. This helps in identifying potential issues early without extensive resource investment.

Level 2: Detailed Assessment

Level 2 offers a more precise evaluation by incorporating more comprehensive inspection data and refined calculations. This level is important for components where a basic assessment might be too conservative, providing a balance between accuracy and effort. It helps in making more informed decisions about the component’s fitness for continued service, reducing the risk of unnecessary repairs or replacements.

Level 3: Advanced Assessment

The most sophisticated level, Level 3, uses extensive data and advanced modeling techniques like finite element analysis (FEA). This level is crucial for critical components where the highest accuracy is required. It ensures that all potential damage mechanisms are thoroughly evaluated, providing the most reliable assessment of the component’s structural integrity. This level is vital for preventing catastrophic failures and ensuring the long-term safety and performance of essential equipment.
