How acoustic emission tests reveal hidden risks

10.12.2025

In many industrial installations, small cracks or material defects often go unnoticed until it’s too late. Traditional inspection methods typically detect problems only when they have become severe. Acoustic emission testing (AET) offers a solution: AET listens to the material itself and uncovers risks before damage occurs.

During an acoustic emission test for the requalification of a pressure vessel, a group of indications was detected near a support. A more thorough investigation was requested at the exact position of the indication to determine its nature.
After removing the insulation, a crack was found in the weld between the reinforcement plate of the vessel and the support. An additional penetrant test made it possible to accurately determine the length of the crack, allowing appropriate follow-up actions to be planned. Thanks to this approach, a potentially serious defect was discovered in time, without the need to immediately take the installation out of service. This example shows how acoustic emission testing brings hidden risks to light and contributes to the safe and reliable operation of pressure equipment. Early detection enables corrective measures to be efficiently prepared, which not only increases safety but also prevents unnecessary costs and downtime.

For our customers, this means:

  • Safety: Preventing incidents that endanger people and installations.
  • Cost savings: Early intervention avoids expensive repairs and production downtime.
  • Reliability: Continuity of processes without unexpected failures.
