Digital Product Passport
Build a structured, trusted passport for your products
What the Digital Product Passport is
The Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a structured, digital record that captures key information about a product’s identity, materials, environmental footprint, and lifecycle information. It is linked to the physical product via a data carrier such as a QR code, RFID, or similar technology, allowing the information to be accessed when needed. Introduced under the EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), it is designed to make product information transparent and accessible to all relevant stakeholders: including regulators, businesses across the value chain, and consumers. In practice, the DPP turns valuable sustainability data that today sits scattered across spreadsheets, supplier emails, and PDFs into a structured, interoperable digital record. Linked to a unique product identifier, it enables consistent access to verified information throughout the product’s lifecycle from raw material sourcing to end-of-life treatment.
Which products need a DPP and when
The DPP is being rolled out product group by product group under ESPR, with delegated acts setting the exact requirements and timelines for each category. The first concrete implementation will come from the battery sector, where Digital Product Passports are expected to become mandatory from February 2027, marking the practical starting point of the system. At the same time, the European Commission is required to establish the central DPP registry by 19 July 2026. This registry will act as an EU-wide index of product passports, linking unique product identifiers to their respective digital records.
Beyond batteries, the ESPR working plan identifies priority product groups such as:
- Iron and steel
- Aluminium
- Textiles
- Furniture (including mattresses)
- Tyres
Indicative timelines suggest that requirements for iron and steel and similar materials could apply towards 2028, while textiles and other consumer-facing categories are expected to follow from around 2028–2029, depending on the final delegated acts. If your product falls into an early wave, preparation needs to start now. Collecting, validating, and structuring the necessary data typically takes longer than expected. Even for later categories, the underlying data foundations are the same, meaning early action turns a future compliance burden into a strategic advantage.
See our ESPR Support page for the full regulatory picture and how the passport fits within Ecodesign.
What a future-proof passport must contain
While exact requirements vary by product group, a DPP typically needs to bring together:
- Product identity and traceability: unique identifiers, manufacturer and facility information, and the data carrier that links the physical product to its digital record.
- Material and composition data: Information on substances used, including substances of concern, and the origin and sourcing of key materials.
- Durability, reparability and circularity: information on expected lifespan, spare-part availability, repair, and recyclability or recycled content.
- Compliance and documentation: declarations, certificates, and conformity of evidence kept current, accessible and audit-ready (for future obligations). The requirements for full compliance will be published at a later stage and are currently not announced.
Our DPP solution
A complementary approach to DPP preparation
As organizations prepare for the Digital Product Passport (DPP) under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) and other relevant regulations, success depends not only on regulatory understanding and data quality, but also on the ability to manage, structure, and deliver product data within robust digital systems.
To fully support our clients along this journey, TÜV AUSTRIA Belgium combines its expertise with advanced Digital Product Passport solutions provided through a strategic partnership with external digital solution providers.
End-to-end value for our clients
By combining complementary strengths, we enable a seamless path from data preparation to DPP implementation including:
- ESPR-support and roadmap development
- Structured data collection and DPP readiness
- Digital infrastructure for DPP generation and management
- Secure data handling and system integration
- Scalable solutions aligned with evolving EU requirements
A stronger, integrated offering
This allows us to offer a comprehensive, end-to-end approach that goes beyond regulatory requirements:
- Transforming raw data into DPP-ready structured datasets
- Ensuring credibility
- Enabling secure, transparent, and interoperable digital product ecosystems
Supporting your transition to a data-driven future
Together, we help organizations reduce complexity, mitigate risks, and accelerate their transition toward DPPs, turning regulatory requirements into a strategic advantage.
Who this is for
Manufacturers, importers, and brand owners placing products on the EU market in regulated groups; especially organisations in several sectors (iron and steel, batteries, mattresses) and those preparing textiles and other upcoming groups. It is equally relevant to sustainability, quality, and compliance teams who will own the passport data once it is live.
Key Benefits
- Turn a regulatory obligation into a single source of truth for product data.
- Reduce the potential future risk as DPP requirements come into force.
- Build trust with regulators, business customers, and consumers through verified information.
- Avoid last-minute scrambles by starting the data work before your deadline.
- One partner across the whole journey, from scoping to full DPP implementation
