DIEST, 27 november 2025 – Duurzaamheid krijgt donderdag letterlijk wortels op de speelplaats van basisschool KSD Sint-Jan te Diest. Samen met de leerlingen plant TÜV AUSTRIA België een eigen Miyawaki-schoolbos: een dicht, inheems microbos dat de biodiversiteit versterkt en kinderen laat ervaren wat natuur doet met welzijn en leervermogen.
Met dit project brengt TÜV AUSTRIA België haar Sustainability Solutions tot leven, het programma waarmee ze bedrijven begeleidt in hun transitie naar een duurzaam, klimaatbewust en sociaal verantwoord bedrijfsbeleid. Het schoolbos illustreert hoe de onderneming haar ESG-principes (Environmental, Social & Governance) niet enkel adviseert, maar ook zelf toepast in de praktijk.
“We willen niet alleen bedrijven helpen met hun duurzaamheidsbeleid, maar zelf ook verantwoordelijkheid nemen”, zegt Anja De Jonghe, Manager Sustainability bij TÜV AUSTRIA België. “Dit schoolbos is een symbolisch én concreet voorbeeld van hoe we onze eigen ESG-doelen in actie omzetten: met name lokaal, educatief en met impact op de volgende generatie.”
Het project kadert binnen Learning Leaves, een programma van Forest Forward dat scholen en bedrijven samenbrengt om meer natuur te creëren in stedelijke omgevingen. UGent zal het bos gebruiken om luchtkwaliteit en biodiversiteit te meten waardoor het ook een wetenschappelijke en educatieve meerwaarde krijgt.
“Gezonde wortels maken sterke bomen”, zegt Maureen Czarnecki, directeur van basisschool KSD Sint-Jan. “Dankzij dit initiatief leren onze kinderen op een zeer praktische manier zorg dragen voor de natuur. Ze zullen altijd vol trots kunnen terugkijken met de gedachte: ‘wij hebben deze bomen helemaal zélf aangeplant’.”
Diest pupils plant own school forest: playground becomes green learning space
DIEST, Nov. 27, 2025 – Sustainability will literally take root in the playground of KSD Sint-Jan School in Diest on Thursday. Together with the pupils, TÜV AUSTRIA Belgium is planting its own Miyawaki school forest: a dense, indigenous micro-forest that enhances biodiversity and lets children experience what nature does to well-being and learning abilities.
With this project, TÜV AUSTRIA Belgium brings to life its Sustainability Solutions, the program through which it guides companies in their transition to a sustainable, climate-conscious and socially responsible business policy. The school forest illustrates how the company not only advises on its ESG (Environmental, Social & Governance) principles, but also applies them in practice itself.
“We not only want to help companies with their sustainability policies, but also take responsibility ourselves,” says Anja De Jonghe, Manager Sustainability at TÜV AUSTRIA Belgium. “This school forest is a symbolic and concrete example of how we put our own ESG goals into action: specifically local, educational and with impact on the next generation.“
The project is part of Learning Leaves, a Forest Forward program that brings schools and businesses together to create more nature in urban environments. UGent will use the forest to measure air quality and biodiversity, adding scientific and educational value as well.
“Healthy roots make strong trees,” said Maureen Czarnecki, principal of KSD Sint-Jan School. “Thanks to this initiative, our children learn to take care of nature in a very practical way. They will always be able to look back with pride thinking: ‘we planted these trees all by ourselves’.“
