Corrosion-Related Analyses
Indirect analyses to support corrosion assessment
Besides direct corrosion testing through exposure testing or electrochemical testing, valuable information on corrosion processes and corrosion risk can also be obtained indirectly.
TÜV AUSTRIA Belgium performs a range of corrosion-related analyses to support root cause investigations, failure analysis, material selection, condition assessment, and risk evaluation. These analyses provide additional insight into the origin of deposits, the aggressiveness of a medium, the presence of microbiological activity, and the overall corrosivity of the environment.
Below you can find an overview of some of the analyses we perform in this field.
Analysis of deposits and corrosion products
Knowledge of the composition of deposits and corrosion products can provide valuable insight into the origin of a deposit or the underlying corrosion mechanism.
As a first screening technique, SEM-EDX analysis is often applied. This semi-quantitative method is used to determine the elemental composition of the sample. Where needed, additional analytical techniques can be used for further characterization, including:
- Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA)
- FTIR spectroscopy
This combination of techniques enables a more complete understanding of the deposit or corrosion product and supports a more reliable interpretation of the corrosion process.
Extraction tests
TÜV AUSTRIA Belgium carries out a wide range of extraction tests in its chemical laboratory to identify corrosive components present in or on the surface of materials. Examples include:
- Extraction of insulation materials according to ASTM C871, with evaluation according to ASTM C795
- Extraction of activated carbon to determine pH and chloride content, based on ASTM D5029
These tests are particularly relevant when assessing the corrosive potential of specific materials or contaminants.
Evaluation of MIC risk
Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC) cannot always be identified unequivocally based on visual examination alone. When MIC is suspected, additional testing is recommended on the process medium and/or on deposits and corrosion products to evaluate the presence of microorganisms and the likelihood of MIC.
If a representative water sample is available, TÜV AUSTRIA Belgium can perform:
- BART (Biological Activity Reaction Test) as a screening technique
- Q-PCR as a more quantitative technique
These methods allow evaluation of the presence of different bacterial groups associated with MIC and support a more informed corrosion risk assessment.
Soil analysis
TÜV AUSTRIA Belgium has recognized environmental experts in-house in both soil corrosion and gases or hazardous substances.
By combining in-situ measurements with additional laboratory analyses, we can make a reliable estimate of soil corrosivity in accordance with Vlarem II Annex 5.17.5. This service supports the integrity assessment of buried assets and installations exposed to soil environments.
Water analysis
A range of water parameters can be determined to estimate the corrosivity of water towards a specific material. Parameters may include:
- pH
- Conductivity
- Hardness (total hardness, Ca hardness, Mg hardness)
- Alkalinity (P, M, OH)
- Iron content
- Other relevant chemical indicators
This type of analysis is typically performed for:
- Cooling water
- Water from sprinkler pipes
- Wastewater
- Drain water
- Process water
Water analysis provides essential input for corrosion risk evaluation and material compatibility assessment.
Evaluation of process water containing glycols
TÜV AUSTRIA Belgium also performs evaluation of the corrosivity of process water in relation to ethylene glycol or propylene glycol degradation.
This is assessed by freezing point determination in accordance with ASTM D1177. The results help determine whether glycol degradation may contribute to increased corrosivity in the system.
Supporting corrosion assessment with targeted analyses
Corrosion-related analyses provide important complementary information to direct testing methods. By combining laboratory analysis, expert interpretation, and knowledge of corrosion mechanisms, TÜV AUSTRIA Belgium helps clients gain a clearer understanding of corrosion risks and degradation processes.
