TÜV AUSTRIA Belgium operates a fully compliant industrial radiography bunker
Radiography has long been one of the most reliable non-destructive testing (NDT) methods to assess the integrity of metallic and non-metallic components. But with new regulations in place, the way radiography is applied is changing significantly.
Following the Royal Decree of 17 February 2023 (published 3 April 2023), on-site radiography is becoming increasingly restricted. From April 2025, inspections of smaller components weighing less than 500 kilograms and measuring under one cubic metre must be performed in a dedicated bunker facility.
To anticipate these changes and support industry needs, TÜV AUSTRIA Belgium has invested in a large industrial radiography bunker near Leuven. The facility has been purpose-built to ensure safe, controlled, and legally compliant inspections.
The bunker measures 19 metres by 6 metres, is equipped with an overhead crane of 3.2 tonnes and a forklift, and is designed to handle a wide range of components under strict radiation safety conditions. All inspections are carried out in full compliance with the Federal Agency for Nuclear Control (FANC) and the requirements of the Belgian Royal Decree.
