Extended Key Takeaways
Innovation at TÜV AUSTRIA
TÜV AUSTRIA prioritizes innovation through collaborative research projects with universities and in-house R&D initiatives. Digital innovation is a central focus, driving advancements in technology and reliability.
OMV’s ReOIL Process
OMV developed the ReOIL process as a chemical recycling solution for plastic-rich waste streams unsuitable for mechanical recycling. As a completely new process without existing standards or literature, understanding and controlling potential damage mechanisms during material selection is essential. Lessons learned from the pilot and demo plant, which started in 2024, and corrosion tests are being applied to the industrial plant scheduled for start-up in 2030. This ensures material selection with a strong emphasis on reliability. Since 2020, TÜV AUSTRIA Belgium has supported OMV in the material selection process through literature studies, laboratory tests, damage investigations, and the development of a risk-based material selection philosophy tailored to the ReOIL process.
Integrity Operating Windows (IOWs)
IOWs define preset limits on process variables to maintain equipment integrity. They serve as an early warning system and operational guardrails, ensuring process reliability. IOWs can be integrated with Risk-Based Inspection (RBI) studies and complement Corrosion Control Documents (CCDs).
Insights from NIKK on Engineering Plastics
NIKK explained the main properties and corrosion mechanisms of engineering plastics, including chemical degradation, stress corrosion cracking, swelling, and radiation attack. Practical examples and prevention strategies were provided to help avoid these forms of damage.
Non-Destructive Testing of Plastics
TÜV AUSTRIA Belgium demonstrated NDT techniques for HDPE welding based on EN ISO and ASME standards. Methods included Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT), Remote Visual Inspection (RVI), and Direct Visual Inspection (DVI), showcasing their application in ensuring weld integrity and material performance.
